Check the listing for details. 1878 Mexico 5L TEPA pre-revolution Porfiriato Token. Condition: Ungraded, Made in Mexico. Listed at 90.00 USD. These tokens were used as a form of private, unofficial currency on large agricultural estates (haciendas) in Mexico, primarily in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Porfiriato Workers (often in a system similar to bonded serfdom or peonage) were paid their wages in these tokens instead of national currency. The tokens could only be redeemed for goods like food, clothing, and other necessities at the hacienda's own store, known as a "tienda de raya". This system ensured that workers were tied to the land and often remained in constant debt to the hacienda owner, as they couldn't use their tokens elsewhere to save money or leave.
