In the mid 1600’s silver coins were leaving Dublin, Ireland at an alarming rate. As a crude solution, King Charles Rex initiated an emergency order to produce these crowned “C.R.” coins, which were stamped on irregular shaped silver flan (coin blanks / planchets) and issued a decree to slightly de-value them in an effort to reduce the rate that they would leave the island.
